For those looking to mix things up, feel free to substitute the tart apples with your favorite variety, whether it’s Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. If you’re dairy-free, you might try using a plant-based cream cheese alternative. Always check labels for allergens, especially in the crescent rolls and cream cheese, as they can vary by brand and may contain hidden ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 cups tart apples, chopped and peeled
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened apple juice
  • 1 (4 ounce) package refrigerated crescent dinner rolls
  • 1 (3 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 2 teaspoons 2% low-fat milk

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine 1/3 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg.
  2. Add 2 cups chopped and peeled tart apples and 1/4 cup unsweetened apple juice; toss to coat.
  3. Bring to a boil, cooking and stirring for about 2 minutes or until the mixture thickens.
  4. Remove from the heat and set aside.
  5. Separate the refrigerated crescent dough into four triangles.
  6. On a lightly floured surface, roll two triangles into circles about 5 inches in diameter.
  7. Press each circle into an 8-ounce ramekin, making sure the dough goes up about 1/2 inch on the sides.
  8. In a small mixing bowl, beat together 1 (3 ounce) package softened cream cheese, 2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth.
  9. Spread the cream cheese mixture over the dough in the ramekins, then top with the apple mixture.
  10. Roll out the remaining crescent dough into circles about 4 inches in diameter and place them over the filling in the ramekins.
  11. Cut slits in the top of the dough to allow steam to escape during baking.
  12. Bake in a preheated oven at 375° for 20-25 minutes or until the filling is bubbly and the topping is golden brown.
  13. In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar and 2 teaspoons of 2% low-fat milk to make a glaze; drizzle over the warm pies before serving.
