For those with nut allergies, feel free to skip the pecans or walnuts, as the brownies will still be delicious without them. If you’re looking for a richer flavor, using high-quality chocolate chips can make a significant difference. Additionally, if caramels aren’t available, a homemade caramel sauce could work perfectly in the recipe.

Chocolate and Caramel Layered Brownies Recipe

Total Time≤ 1 hour
Servings1
Serving Size1 (1585 g)

Ingredients

  • 1 (18 ounce) package German chocolate cake mix
  • 2/3 cup evaporated milk, divided
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup pecans or 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1 (14 ounce) package caramels
  • 1 (12 ounce) package semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
  2. In a double boiler over medium heat, mix 1/3 cup of evaporated milk with the caramels. Stir occasionally until the caramels melt and the mixture is smooth.
  3. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the German chocolate cake mix, the remaining evaporated milk, melted butter, and the chopped nuts. Be prepared for a thick batter.
  4. Spread half of the chocolate cake mixture into the bottom of a 9×13 baking pan.
  5. Bake for 6 minutes, just enough to set that base layer.
  6. Once removed from the oven, sprinkle the entire bag of chocolate chips over the top.
  7. Drizzle the melted caramel mixture generously over the chocolate chips.
  8. With greased hands, form the remaining cake mixture into several patties and gently place them over the caramel, ensuring most of it is covered; spreading can be tricky here.
  9. Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 18 minutes until the top is firm.
  10. Allow to cool on a wire rack, then refrigerate until set before cutting into small squares.
