For those with allergies or dietary restrictions, feel free to substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free blend. You can also swap the egg substitute for a real egg if you’re not avoiding eggs. If you want to amp up the flavor, using a dairy-free milk might be a fun twist, or you could try different types of chocolate chips, like dark or white chocolate, depending on your sweet tooth’s cravings.

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon sugar substitute
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup nonfat milk
  • 1/2 tablespoon applesauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup egg substitute
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Coat a waffle iron with cooking spray and preheat it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. In a large bowl, combine 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup whole wheat flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/2 tablespoon sugar substitute, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together 3/4 cup nonfat milk, 1/2 tablespoon applesauce, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 1/4 cup egg substitute until smooth.
