If you’re looking to swap ingredients, margarine can substitute for butter without a hitch. For those avoiding nuts, simply leave out the walnuts without compromising the cake’s integrity. You can also opt for dairy-free options on the pudding mix and Cool Whip, and be sure to check the labels on the Oreo cookies to avoid allergens.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter or 1 cup margarine
  • 6 ounces bittersweet chocolate
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups walnuts
  • 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 5 cups milk
  • 4 (3 1/3 ounce) packages instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 1 (18 ounce) package Oreo cookies
  • 2 (8 ounce) containers Cool Whip (regular size)
  • 1/4-1/2 cup Hershey’s syrup

Instructions

  1. Microwave 1 cup butter or margarine and 6 ounces bittersweet chocolate in a 2-quart glass bowl on high for 1 1/2 minutes or until the chocolate is melted, stirring until smooth.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 cups granulated sugar, 4 large eggs, and 1 tablespoon vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. In another bowl, toss together 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 cups walnuts (if desired), and 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips.
  4. Gently stir the remaining 1 cup of flour and 1/8 teaspoon salt into the sugar mixture, then add the walnut and chocolate chip mixture. Stir until combined.
  5. Spread the batter into a lightly greased 13x9x2-inch pan. Bake at 350°F for 30 to 40 minutes. Once done, set aside to cool completely.
  6. For the Oreo layer, crush the entire package of Oreo cookies (except for 10 cookies) in a blender or a Ziploc bag until crumbly.
  7. Drizzle 1/4-1/2 cup Hershey’s syrup over the cooled brownie layer, spreading it with a spoon. Then sprinkle the crushed Oreo cookies on top, drizzling more Hershey’s syrup again and spreading it around.
  8. For the pudding layer, pour 5 cups milk into a large bowl, add 4 packages of instant chocolate pudding mix, and beat with a wire whisk for 2 minutes. Let it stand for 2 more minutes to thicken.
  9. Spread the pudding mixture over the brownie and Oreo layers evenly.
  10. For the topping, spread 2 containers of Cool Whip over the pudding layer. Top with the remaining 10 Oreo cookies, either whole or crumbled, and drizzle more Hershey’s syrup over the top for a decorative touch.

For an equally delightful dessert, I highly recommend making the Double Cinnamon Chip Brownies. The combination of warm cinnamon and rich chocolate chips creates a unique flavor experience that you won’t want to miss.
