When it comes to substitutions, you could easily swap out the salted butter for unsalted if preferred, just adjust the seasoning accordingly. If you’re looking for a vegan option, a plant-based butter will work just fine, but be mindful of the garlic being from a jar versus fresh. Also, sourcing high-quality olive oil can really enhance the flavor of the garlic butter, so don’t just grab any bottle off the shelf; give it a whirl.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced from a jar, water packed
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons pepper, freshly cracked and ground
  • 1 cup salted butter, softened

Instructions

  1. Put the 1 cup of softened butter into a bowl.
  2. Add the 2 teaspoons of freshly cracked pepper in a little pile on top of the butter.
  3. In a non-stick skillet, brown the 1 tablespoon of minced garlic on low heat until the water evaporates.
  4. Add a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and stir to combine.
  5. Continue to cook until the garlic begins to turn light brown.
  6. Add the 1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning and another drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.
  7. Stir to combine and leave on heat until the seasonings feel like they have softened under your spatula.
  8. Scrape the garlic mixture into the butter bowl on top of the pile of pepper; while it’s hot, it will melt a little of the butter to better blend the flavors.
  9. Wait about 10 minutes for the garlic and seasoning to cool a little, then mix everything together thoroughly.
  10. To use for garlic bread, spread liberally onto the cut sides of your favorite bread and put the two spread sides together facing each other. Wrap in foil and either freeze in a Zip-loc bag or bake at 350 degrees for about 6 minutes. If baking the bread from the freezer, allow it to defrost first.
