For anyone avoiding gluten, a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend would work well in place of all-purpose flour. If you’re nut-free, simply leave out the walnuts or swap them for seeds, like pumpkin or sunflower seeds. Always check that your chocolate chips are dairy-free if that’s a concern. Fresh ingredients will give your cookies that delicious flavor we all crave, so choose the best quality butter and chocolate you can find.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour, unsifted
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 6 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 6 tablespoons light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (Guittard Super Cookie Chips, 10 oz. package)
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  2. In a small bowl, combine 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons of flour, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt; set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together 1/2 cup of softened butter, 6 tablespoons of granulated sugar, and 6 tablespoons of light brown sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in 1 large egg and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  5. Stir in 2 cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips and 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts until evenly distributed.
  6. Drop by well-rounded teaspoonfuls or using a cookie scoop onto ungreased cookie sheets (using parchment paper is my go-to), spacing them at least 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the cookies are golden brown. Allow them to cool slightly on the sheets before transferring them to a wire rack.
