Honey Challah Rolls recipe

When making Honey Challah Rolls, feel free to substitute bread flour with all-purpose flour if that’s what you have on hand, but keep in mind that bread flour offers a chewier texture. If you have an egg allergy, you might experiment with a flax egg or other egg replacers. Fresh yeast can also be used in place of active dry yeast, adjusting the quantity accordingly. Always check the expiration dates on your yeast for optimal rise; nothing is more disappointing than deflated dough.

Honey Challah Rolls Recipe

Servings16
Serving Size1 (54 g)

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2-4 cups bread flour
  • 2 packages active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup hot water (120 to 130 degrees)
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. If using a bread machine, add 3 1/2 cups bread flour, 2 packages active dry yeast, and 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, then separate one egg and reserve its white for later. Set the machine to manual cycle to mix and rise but not bake.
  2. In an electric mixer, combine the flour mixture with the remaining ingredients: add 1 egg yolk, the other whole egg, 1 cup hot water, 2 tablespoons honey, and 2 tablespoons oil. Mix well before kneading for about 6 minutes with a dough hook, adding more flour if the dough is sticky, until it’s smooth and elastic. Alternatively, knead on a floured board for about 10 minutes.
  3. Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, turning it to coat the top. Cover with plastic wrap and a damp towel, then place in a warm spot to rise for about 30 minutes.
  4. After rising, punch down the dough and let it rest for 5 minutes. Divide it evenly into 16 pieces, shaping them into balls.
  5. Arrange the rolls in a greased 9-inch layer cake pan, placing 10 around the perimeter, 5 in the middle, and 1 in the center.
  6. Lightly beat the reserved egg white and brush it over the rolls. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top for that lovely nutty crunch.
  7. Cover the pan and let the rolls rise again until doubled, about 15 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake the rolls for about 22 minutes, or until they’re golden brown. Serve warm and enjoy the delightful aroma.
