If you’re looking for alternatives, feel free to substitute the margarine with butter for a slightly different flavor profile. Just keep in mind that not all margarines are created equal; you definitely want to steer clear of those with high vegetable oil content. For a gluten-free option, you could try a gluten-free all-purpose flour mix in place of the self-rising flour, but some adjustments might be needed for the rise.
