For those with allergies, be mindful that cake mixes often contain gluten and may have traces of nuts. If you’re looking to substitute, a gluten-free cake mix can be used instead. Be sure to choose pumpkin puree or an appropriate frosting that aligns with dietary needs. Standard Air Heads are usually gluten-free, but always check the packaging to be safe.

Mummy Cakes Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 (18 1/4 ounce) package cake mix
- 1 1/4 cups water
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 3 eggs
- 1 (16 ounce) container frosting
- 20 white mystery flavor Air Heads taffy
- 48 decorative candies (icing eyes)
- powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine one package of cake mix, one and a quarter cups of water, one third cup of vegetable oil, and three eggs. Mix well until the batter is smooth and well combined.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line 24 cupcake liners in a muffin pan and fill each about two-thirds full with the batter. Bake according to package directions for 17 to 22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Once baked, remove the cupcakes from the oven and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack.
- While the cupcakes are cooling, take the wrappers off the Air Heads. Lightly dust your work surface with powdered sugar to prevent sticking. Roll each Air Head into a thin layer using a rolling pin.
- Using a pizza cutter, slice each rolled Air Head into thin strips lengthwise to create mummy wrappings.
- Once the cupcakes are cooled, spread a thin layer of frosting on top of each cupcake to help the Air Head strips adhere.
- Take one strip of the rolled Air Head and place it across the center of the cupcake. Trim if necessary to fit. Add two icing eyes below the strip, and continue wrapping the cupcake with more Air Head strips to mimic a mummy’s bandages.
- Serve your Mummy Cakes and enjoy the spooky fun.
Tips
- The cupcakes can be made a day in advance; just store them in an airtight container to keep them fresh.
- For a more intense flavor, consider using a flavored frosting that complements the cake mix.
- You can freeze the unfrosted cupcakes for later; just make sure they are well wrapped to prevent freezer burn.
