Old-Fashioned Biscuits recipe

For those who might not have buttermilk on hand, using buttermilk powder mixed with water makes a fabulous substitute. If you have any allergies, be cautious with the flour and butter. Always opt for high-quality ingredients for the best flavor. You can also experiment with whole wheat flour for a heartier biscuit, though the texture will differ.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, chilled and cut in small cubes
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of sugar.
  2. Cut in 1/2 cup of chilled butter using a pastry cutter or two knives until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. With a fork, stir in 3/4 cup of buttermilk to form a soft dough. If using buttermilk powder, just mix it with water as needed.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured workspace and knead gently no more than 10 times to form a ball, as over-kneading can make the biscuits tough.
  5. Roll the dough into a 6 x 6-inch square on the floured surface.
  6. Place the square on an ungreased baking sheet and cut into 12 portions without separating them.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
  8. Serve warm with butter, honey, jam, or even a savory gravy for a special touch.
