Pretzels recipe

When making pretzels, feel free to switch out the flour for whole wheat for a nuttier flavor or use dairy alternatives for the milk if you’re looking to avoid lactose. Always check for allergies, especially if you’re considering toppings like cheese or seeds. Fresh ingredients make all the difference, so try sourcing them from your local market when possible.

Ingredients

  • 4 – 4 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • poppy seeds or sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 2 cups flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1 package dry yeast, and 1 1/2 teaspoons salt.
  2. Heat 1 cup milk, 1/2 cup water, and 2 tablespoons oil until very warm, around 120 to 130 degrees F. Stir the mixture into the dry ingredients.
  3. Stir in enough of the remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth, which should take about 4 to 6 minutes.
  5. Cover the dough and let it rest on the floured surface for 10 minutes.
  6. Divide the rested dough into 14 equal pieces.
  7. Roll each piece into a 20-inch rope and cover them to let rest for another 5 to 10 minutes, allowing them to rise slightly.
  8. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
  9. To shape the pretzels, curve the ends of each rope to create a circle. Cross the ends at the top, twist them once, and lay them over the bottom of the circle.
  10. Place the shaped pretzels on 2 greased baking sheets.
  11. Brush the pretzels with the lightly beaten eggs.
  12. Bake the pretzels at 350 degrees F for 15 minutes.
  13. After 15 minutes, remove them from the oven and brush again with the beaten eggs. Sprinkle with salt, cheese, poppy seeds, or sesame seeds according to your preference.
  14. Return the pretzels to the oven and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until they are golden brown and done.
  15. Remove the pretzels from the baking sheets and let cool on wire racks.
