When it comes to choosing ingredients, quality can make a significant difference. Using fresh butter and high-quality flour elevates the flavor of the biscuits. For those with dietary restrictions, alternatives like coconut milk or a plant-based butter can work well. Just remember, the texture may vary slightly depending on your substitutes, so be prepared for a little experimentation.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Sift together 2 cups all-purpose flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, 3 teaspoons baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a large bowl.
  2. Cut in 1/2 cup butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs; you can use a pastry cutter or your fingers for the part.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat together 1 egg and 1/2 cup milk.
  4. Add the egg and milk mixture all at once to the dry ingredients, stirring just until the mixture is moist – no need to overmix here; a few lumps are okay.
  5. Knead the dough gently on a floured surface for about 30 seconds. Be gentle; we want tender biscuits, not tough ones.
  6. Pat or roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  7. Use a floured 2 1/2 inch cutter to cut into 6 biscuits, making sure to press straight down without twisting the cutter.
  8. Place the biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet and bake at 450 degrees Fahrenheit for about 10 minutes, or until they are lightly golden.
  9. Once baked, split the biscuits and butter the bottoms. Fill them with fresh fruit and a dollop of whipped cream, then serve warm.
