Sourdough Dinner Rolls recipe

When making Sourdough Dinner Rolls, the quality of your sourdough starter can really impact the flavor. If you’re looking for a sweeter twist, feel free to use brown sugar instead of white sugar, or even experiment with honey. If you’re gluten-free, try a suitable flour blend, but remember that the texture may vary. And don’t forget to check for any allergies related to wheat or gluten when serving.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sourdough starter
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar or 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 -4 cups flour (I use 1/2 white and 1/2 whole wheat.)
  • butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Lightly oil a 9 x 13 inch pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup sourdough starter, 1 1/2 cups warm water, 1 tablespoon yeast, 1 tablespoon salt, 2 tablespoons sugar (either white or brown), and 2 tablespoons olive oil.
  3. Stir in 3 to 4 cups flour, adding it 1/2 cup at a time, until the dough becomes manageable and not too sticky.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead well for about 8 to 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the kneaded dough in a bowl, cover it, and set it in a warm place until it doubles in size, which should take about 1 to 2 hours.
  6. Once doubled, punch the dough down gently and, using lightly floured hands, form it into rolls.
  7. Place the rolls on the prepared pan, leaving space between them, and let them rise until doubled again, about 30 to 45 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  9. Bake the rolls for approximately 20 minutes, or until golden brown. In the last 5 minutes of baking, brush them with melted butter and return them to the oven.
