When preparing Sourdough Jack Bread, feel free to experiment with flavored artisan breads if a classic sourdough isn’t available. Ingredients

  • 1 (1 lb) round sourdough loaf, unsliced
  • 1 lb sliced monterey jack cheese
  • 8 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup chopped scallion
  • 2 tablespoons poppy seeds

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Using a sharp bread knife, cut the sourdough loaf in a grid-like pattern, being careful not to slice through the bottom crust.
  3. Insert about 2 dozen slices of Monterey Jack cheese between each of the deep cuts you made in the bread.
  4. In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, chopped scallions, and poppy seeds. Stir until mixed well.
  5. Create a blanket of aluminum foil large enough to completely wrap around the bread. Place the bread in the center of the foil.
  6. Drizzle the butter mixture generously over the bread and cheese, allowing it to seep into all the nooks and crannies.
  7. Tightly wrap the foil around the bread and place it on a baking sheet to catch any drips.
  8. Bake the wrapped bread in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.
  9. After 15 minutes, carefully open the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and is bubbling. Be cautious of the hot steam when opening the foil.
  10. To serve, place the unwrapped bread in a napkin-lined basket and let guests rip off pieces of the cheesy delight.
