Steam Buns are a delightful treat that can transform any meal into an exciting culinary experience. With their light and fluffy texture, the buns are perfect for soaking up flavors and pairing with your favorite dishes. Let’s get started on making the yummy Steam Buns.

When it comes to ingredients, feel free to substitute the bread flour with all-purpose flour if that’s what you have on hand, though the texture may vary slightly. For anyone with gluten sensitivities, a gluten-free flour blend can be used, but the results may differ. Always ensure your yeast is fresh for the best rise, and if you’re looking for a richer flavor, you might consider adding a bit of milk powder to the mix.

Steam Buns Recipe
Ingredients
- 4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup warm milk (105-115 F)
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 1/2-3 3/4 cups bread flour
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tablespoon shortening
- 1 dash salt
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, dissolve 4 teaspoons of active dry yeast and 1/4 cup of granulated sugar in 1 cup of warm milk (between 105-115 F).
- Stir in 2 large eggs, 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 2 cups of the bread flour, beating for 2 minutes until well combined.
- Gradually add enough of the remaining 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 cups of bread flour to form a soft dough.
- Knead the dough for 10-12 minutes using a dough hook or by hand until it is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, turning it once to grease the surface. Cover it and let it rise until doubled in size.
- Once risen, punch down the dough and let it rest for 10 minutes. Then, divide it into 8 equal pieces and shape each piece into a bun.
- Place the shaped buns on a greased cookie sheet, cover, and let them rise for another 15-20 minutes.
- In a large non-stick electric skillet or frying pan, combine 1/2 cup of water, 1 tablespoon of shortening, and a dash of salt. Bring to a boil on high heat.
- Once boiling, add four buns to the mixture, cover with a lid, and reduce the heat to 250 degrees.
- Cook for 10-15 minutes without removing the lid, listening for the delightful sounds of frying as the water evaporates.
- After 10-15 minutes, remove the lid and increase the temperature to 375 degrees to brown both sides of the buns.
- Repeat the cooking process for the remaining four buns and serve them warm.
