For those with dietary restrictions, consider substituting all-purpose flour with a gluten-free blend, but be mindful that the texture may vary. If you’re avoiding soy, you can replace soybean oil with canola or olive oil. Active dry yeast can also be swapped for instant yeast; just adjust the water temperature accordingly and skip the activation step. Always check for allergens if you’re serving others.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1/3 cup soybean oil
  • 6 -7 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vital wheat gluten

Instructions

  1. Dissolve 2 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast and 2 tablespoons sugar in 1/2 cup warm water, letting it stand for about nine to ten minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the yeast mixture with 1/3 cup soybean oil, 1 tablespoon salt, and 2 cups of all-purpose flour, stirring until well mixed.
  3. Gradually stir in 4 cups of the remaining flour and the rest of the warm water until a dough begins to form.
  4. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes, adding additional flour as needed until it’s smooth and elastic.
  5. Form the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly greased bowl, covering with plastic wrap. Allow it to rise in a warm area for about one hour.
  6. Once risen, punch the dough down gently and divide it into eight equal pieces.
  7. Roll each piece into a loaf shape, about twelve inches long, and place them onto two large baking sheets lined with parchment paper.
  8. Cover the loaves and let them rise for another hour until they puff up nicely.
  9. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and when ready, bake the loaves for 25 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
  10. Let the bread cool on a wire rack until it reaches room temperature.
  11. For a twist, brush the tops of the loaves with an egg white mixture and sprinkle with quick-cooking oats for a hearty touch.
  12. To create a Honey & Oats version, simply add 1/2 cup of old fashioned oats into the dough before the first rise.
  13. For added flavor, sprinkle a mixture of shredded cheddar cheese, garlic salt, and Italian seasoning over the dough before baking.
  14. To replicate the Parmesan Oregano bread, mix Parmesan cheese, oregano, and garlic salt and sprinkle it over the unbaked loaves.
